KEITH HERNANDEZ’S ‘FULLY ERECT’ COMMENT PROMPTS AWKWARD SILENCE ON METS BROADCAST

Come again?

During the top of the second inning of the Mets’ 3-0 loss to the Blue Jays at Citi Field Keith Hernandez was seemingly breaking down the art of hitting with Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk at the plate.

Kirk, with two outs and a 3-2 count against Mets starter Justin Verlander, awaited the pitch as Hernandez on the broadcast said: “You want to always be erect when you make contact.”

He was subsequently greeted with dead silence other than the natural sound of Kirk fouling off a payoff pitch.

Exactly 10 awkward seconds later, Hernandez added, “Like a telephone pole!”

Sure, let’s roll with that.

The Mets were held scoreless after eight innings, so maybe heeding some of Hernandez’s advice would’ve been helpful as they were shut down by ex-Met Chris Bassitt, who pitched 7 ²/₃ scoreless innings in the Blue Jays’ win.

After the game, Bassitt flew back to Toronto to be with his wife Jessica, who is in labor.
